Why a Heat Pump Water Heater?

We all know that the HVAC equipment is the biggest “energy user” in a home. What’s the second? The hot water heater.

Traditionally, most people have always had gas or electric water tank heaters. In recent years, tankless have really grown in usage and popularity. Now, there is a new option that is becoming extremely popular: heat pump water heaters. Heat pump water heaters use the same technology as heat pump HVAC systems. They draw heat from the surrounding air and transfer it into the water stored inside a tank. Let’s explore their benefits…

More efficient This is exponentially more efficient than generating heat directly from burning a fuel source. This allows them to be 2-3 times more energy efficient than conventional water heaters. You can further increase their efficiency by installing them in rooms with excess heat.

Safe & Flexible Since heat pump water heaters operate on electricity, there is no potential for carbon monoxide poisoning, which presents the opportunity to say goodbye to poorly-vented gas appliances.  Additionally, because they incorporate a tank, they are available in a variety of sizes, which offers flexibility to meet a wide range of space and usage needs.

Longevity Heat pump water heaters can last between 12 and 15 years. While they can be more expensive than traditional water heaters, they qualify for tax credits up to $2,000.  The choice is yours, but it seems like a no-brainer to me… my next water heater is going to be a heat pump water heater.
