We all play various roles in life, and I’m no exception. Above all, I am a devoted father and husband. I am also a son, a brother, a friend, and a provider, among other things. I believe we all strive to lead meaningful, productive lives that bring joy and purpose to those we love, while also adding value and positively impacting society.
As a Building Performance Specialist, my primary role is that of a coach. At its core, a coach is someone who teaches and guides. My daughter is now off to college, but ever since she was in first grade, I’ve had the privilege of coaching her and many other young ladies in softball and basketball. While the stakes were low, I recognized early on that my approach to coaching could have a lasting effect on their lives.
We’ve all encountered bad coaches: those who scream and yell and focus solely on winning. In contrast, I had three guiding principles that I instilled in my players every day:
Rule 1: “Have Fun.” These are kids, and if they’re not enjoying themselves or looking forward to the next season, then I’ve missed the mark as a coach.
Rule 2: “Attitude and Effort.” Every day, bring a supportive and positive attitude and give your very best effort.
Rule 3: “Laser Focus.” I emphasized this to instill a sense of commitment and urgency, whether during practice or games.
In my Building Performance Specialist role, I am well aware of the fact that what I do can be disruptive to a builder. I show up on a builder’s job site – either unannounced or on very short notice – to execute a Construction Quality Assessment mandated by corporate or upper management. However, my goal is for builders to see me as their coach—someone who is there to help, offer solutions, and set them up for success… not a “cop” who is there to catch mistakes.
Production homebuilders engage IBACOS to support their field staff in maximizing quality, minimizing risk, and improving efficiency. Quite simply, our job is to help builders build better homes. We are passionate about this industry and our mission, and we deeply value the relationships that we have builders across the U.S.
In the future, when you receive that email announcing that IBACOS will be in town and will be spending the day walking through homes in your communities, see it as an opportunity to look forward to rather than something to dread. Consider it a refreshing break from your daily routine. We're here to support you and make your day-to-day work easier as you strive to create homes for your clients that are not only beautiful, but meet a standard of quality that is higher than you thought possible.
